On September 13, 2023, Prime Minister Masrour Barzani welcomed the Austrian Foreign Minister, Alexander Schallenberg, to a formal meeting. Joined by Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani, both parties deliberated on deepening the historic and friendly ties between the Kurdistan Region and Austria.
Prime Minister Barzani conveyed his gratitude towards the Austrian people and government for their consistent support and solidarity with the Kurdistan Region. He also highlighted the region’s keen interest in expanding its ties with Austria across various sectors.
Foreign Minister Schallenberg asserted that his visit was a testament to Austria’s commitment to fostering its relationship with the Kurdistan Region.
The dialogue also touched upon ongoing issues between the Kurdistan Region and the Federal Government. Both parties emphasized the significance of safeguarding the constitutional rights of the Kurdistan Region and resolving issues within the constitutional framework, bolstering Iraq’s federal structure. They recognized the value of referencing successful federal models, like that of Austria, as they work towards reinforcing the federal system in Iraq.
Lastly, the meeting addressed concerns surrounding climate change and its implications for both Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, emphasizing the need for joint action.
