In the past months, leading figures in the Kurdistan Region have taken up the “Plant a Tree, Make a City Green” challange, including the President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, the Prime Minister, Masrour Barzani, and the Head of DFR. Minister Dizayee also recited a poem by Kurdish author Faiq Bekas in his video.
Various initiatives were also carried out in light of environmental protection: The KRG has banned the use of plastic bags and is actively researching means to dispose of waste in a sustainable way through recycling. Moreover, a campaign to plant over 10,000 trees along the Erbil-Makhmour main road drew to a close on September 23. The trees have been planted on a 6 kilometer stretch of the road.
The Kurdistan Regional Government has instituted an Environmental Board. For more information, please visit their website: Board of Environment.
