President Nechirvan Barzani received Mr. Eric Chevalier, the Ambassador of France to Iraq in Erbil on October 9.
The meeting, attended by the General Consul of France to Erbil, focused on the latest political developments in Iraq, France’s relations with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, the developments in the Kurdistan Region, the issue of postponing the general elections and the situation in the wider region.
President Nechirvan Barzani and Ambassador Eric Chevalier highlighted the importance of protecting the peace, political stability and security of Iraq for the stability of the wider region, reaffirming the need for cooperation among all political parties to overcome the hardships of this critical period through further dialogue and negotiation.
Both sides agreed that the Iraqis are entitled to better living standards, and that Iraq is capable of solving the problems and overcoming the challenges through the support of the international community. In this context, the efforts of President Emmanuel Macron and France in aiding and encouraging the Iraqi parties to reach an agreement and resolve the problems were highlighted.
Erbil-Baghdad relations and the importance of continued dialogue between the two sides to solve the problems, the status of Shingal, the situation of the Yezidis, the willingness of both sides to further develop the bilateral relations of France with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, and other issues of mutual interest were also discussed.
