President Barzani meets with President Erdoğan in Ankara

On October 9, President Nechirvan Barzani met with Türkiye’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Ankara.

Their discussions focused on Türkiye’s relations with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, as well as potential areas for joint cooperation between Türkiye and the Kurdistan Region. They also addressed the overall situation in Iraq, the political landscape, the upcoming Iraqi parliamentary elections, the circumstances in the Kurdistan Region, and developments in Syria.

Both sides commended the strong ties between Türkiye and the Kurdistan Region, expressing their willingness to enhance cooperation across various sectors, particularly in the economy, trade, and energy.

They also emphasized the importance of resuming oil exports from the Kurdistan Region to global markets via the Turkish Ceyhan Port, in line with Iraq’s economic interests. They agreed that this initiative would contribute to the peace and stability of Iraq as a whole.

President Erdoğan reaffirmed Türkiye’s ongoing support for Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, highlighting the significance of Türkiye’s relations with both.

President Nechirvan Barzani expressed gratitude to Türkiye for its assistance and support to Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, noting that Türkiye is a vital neighbor and that there are many areas for mutual benefit.

The meeting also covered maintaining peace and stability in the region, the progress of the peace process in Türkiye, recent developments in the Middle East, and other matters of shared interest.

President Nechirvan Barzani also met with Türkiye’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in Ankara during his official visit to Türkiye.

Their discussions focused on the shared commitment to enhancing relations between Türkiye, Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, as well as exploring ways to broaden their areas of cooperation.

The meeting addressed the water issue between Türkiye and Iraq. President Nechirvan Barzani highlighted the importance of coordination between the two countries to ensure that water management fulfills the needs of both countries.

The meeting further covered the regional developments and other topics of mutual interest.
