Prime Minister Barzani’s Strategic Engagements in Washington, D.C.

In May 2025, Prime Minister Masrour Barzani undertook a significant diplomatic mission to Washington, D.C., engaging with top U.S. officials to reinforce the enduring partnership between the Kurdistan Region and the United States. His meetings encompassed discussions on security cooperation, energy investments, economic reforms, and regional stability. Notably, he met with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, Secretary of Energy Chris Wright, Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum, and Massad Boulos, Senior Advisor to President Donald Trump. These engagements underscored the mutual commitment to deepening bilateral ties and addressing shared strategic interests.

During his meeting with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Prime Minister Barzani expressed gratitude for the United States’ continued support of the Kurdistan Region, particularly acknowledging Secretary Rubio’s remarks on the resilience of the Region. Secretary Rubio reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to a strong and stable Kurdistan Region within federal Iraq, highlighting its significance in U.S. regional strategy. He also emphasized support for the Kurdistan Region’s role in hosting refugees and protecting the rights of religious and ethnic minorities. The discussions included the resumption of oil exports through the Iraqi-Turkish pipeline, the KRG’s economic diversification efforts, and the importance of safeguarding the Region’s constitutional rights and financial entitlements.

Beyond these high-level meetings, Prime Minister Barzani engaged with various U.S. officials, members of Congress, and private sector representatives to further strengthen the multifaceted relationship between the Kurdistan Region and the United States.
