The first ties between Austria and the Kurdistan Region date back to the 1970s, when Austria provided humanitarian assistance to a number of persecuted Kurds from Iraq. After 2003, strong economic relations developed between the two partners. With the 2012 opening of the 13th KRG representation office in Vienna, a new milestone in the relationship between Austria and Iraqi Kurdistan was reached. In accordance with the constitution of the Republic of Iraq, the KRG Representation in Austria aims to encourage greater cooperation between the respective communities and governments of Austria and the Kurdistan Region.
